About my work.
I am a London-based artist whose practice is rooted in a process-led approach, where intuition and accident are balanced by a keen sense of structure and order. The interplay between control and gestural freedom is central, inviting the viewer to engage with both the formal and intuitive qualities within the work.
I never plan a painting in advance, I might have an idea of colour palette or a particular process to use, but the pleasure for me is in the making and not knowing how a painting will emerge or find itself.
The grid motif - intersecting horizontal and vertical lines - provides a structure within which to explore painterly gesture and colour relationships. Working in this way, building as I go and never planning ahead, can be conducive of memory, place, or state of mind. Artwork titles emerge intuitively, often referencing an actual location or past experience.
In newer works and as an alternative to the grid, painterly gesture has been brought to the fore. The hard-edged element is still present but now defines gesture’s unruly movement - or dance - across a surface, exploring surface texture as well as the weight and contrast between negative and positive spaces.
